Spirit Storm

Spirit Storm by E.J. Stevens

How I got my hands on this book: Bought from Amazon.com for Amazon Kindle

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal

First Sentence:

“A Pox Upon All Thieves,” read the sign hanging at eye level on the wall behind the glass case.

Spirit Storm is the second novel in the Spirit Guide series. All of the wonderfully quirky characters from She Smells the Dead return: Yuki, Calvin, Emma, and Simon. The first novel ended with a cliffhanger, so the reader already had an idea of what Yuki and her friends would be facing next.

Yuki receives smell impressions from the dead. There is just something about her that attracts the spirits to her and the smell impression of any given spirit will not go away until she helps it find peace so it can cross over into the light. Thankfully for her, only the good ones have sought her out.

But Halloween night is fast approaching and that night also equals Samhain…the one night a year when the veil between the worlds is the thinnest and all of the spirits can cross into the world. And guess what? They are all going to head straight for Yuki. Definitely bad news.

Also, Yuki’s not the only one with problems. Cal and Simon are dealing with some major werewolf stuff. Major homicidal werewolf stuff.

And Emma has boy woes. I am definitely feeling an attraction there between her and Simon despite the age difference and how much she may want to deny it.

I love the quirkiness of the characters: Yuki with her nickname and her gothic style; Cal’s American boy good looks enmeshed with New Age-y philosophies; Simon’s irresistible, yet sometimes annoying charm; and Emma’s vegan lifestyle and love for animals. These characters are so unique and fun to follow. I also love all of the sleuthing and research they do on the occult and various other things to help with the werewolf stuff and with Yuki’s smell impressions. The only thing that fell short for me was the actual spirit storm on Samhain night. There was all this growing suspense and then…well, I will not spoil it, but I just thought there would be more. Still, this series rocks. There’s just something about it and the characters that keeps me coming back for more.

Added bonus: No cliffhangers here! Which I imagine may be a bit scary and wonderful for E.J. at the same time. She can do a number of things with the characters next and it will be a complete surprise for us because we were left with a neatly tied up ending. I cannot wait!

Spirit Storm is definitely enjoyable with all of its quirky vegan-eater versus meat-eater banter, spirits who smell like burnt brownies, and hot werewolf-y goodness!
