The world has seen its share of devastation. Even though the survivors have rebuilt, the Aether still wreaks havoc on humanity. The Pods are likely the safest from the Aether storms, but even they are not impenetrable.
Exiled from her own Pod, Reverie (as well as all of its technology), Aria knows her chances of surviving the Death Shop (the wilderness) are slim with the unpredictable Aether storms and cannibals. But an Outsider named Perry finds her and grudgingly helps her survive on the outside.
A skilled hunter with heightened senses, Perry does not trust the Dweller who calls herself Aria, but she is the key to getting him what he seeks.
Aria and Perry do not want to trust each other and they do not want to be friends…but they do accept an alliance with each other. What they do not expect is that their alliance will intertwine their lives and will help decide what will happen to the Dwellers and Outsiders who live under the never sky.
The world of Under the Never Sky was very interesting and Veronica Rossi’s descriptions were so good that I could see everything clearly as I read (I wish I was an artist!). Reverie and the other Pods are all basically the same: white, sterile, utilitarian, and with people all wearing the same drab clothes. But all that does not matter when people like Aria live in virtual worlds where anything goes.
The outside, on the other hand, is full of tribes, who have uneasy alliances as well as wild animals and cannibals. Everything on the outside is very real, but also dangerous.
I enjoyed the wild a lot better than the Pods (of course, life in the Pod does not dominate the story, but I think I learned enough about it to prefer the wild). There are advantages to Pod life. I would not mind being able to escape real life for awhile, but to make it practically a 24/7 thing? No thanks.
I have a lot of notes from when I was reading Under the Never Sky, but the thing is, I take notes arbitrarily. I write down what I think is important without filtering potential spoilers. So in order not to spoil Under the Never Sky for all of you, I cannot share most of my notes.
I can assure you that Under the Never Sky is a fantastic book with interesting conflicts on all levels. The reader has the pleasure of knowing how both Aria and Perry tick through their alternating points-of-view. They are both characters you will like from the beginning. They will not disappoint you, but they will grow…a lot. The side characters are just as good (especially Roar and Marron). There are some really cool Aether-related abilities at play throughout the book as well. I fully enjoyed it. The dialogue, the emotions…all of it was wonderful and already I know that Under the Never Sky makes my personal best of 2012 list.
Recommended for readers of YA who are sixteen and older. There is very little sexual content (it is alluded to a few times), mild violence (what do you expect in a world like this? It is justified, though; hunting animals to survive and killing cannibals who want to eat you), and I think little to no language (I did not document it, so if it was there, it was not bad).
